One of this season’s hottest micro-trends comes in the form of shorts. A staple in most wardrobes, whether they be a jersey pair “for the house” (my personal favourite) or a tailored cupro pair for work, this Spring/Summer is all about baring your pins. While I appreciate not everyone is a huge fan of whipping their legs out, the beauty in the trend is that they come in all lengths, cuts, fits and patterns.
Curvier girls, or those who are a little nervous in the leg-baring trade, should opt for a tailored, longer length, much like a city short. Dark colours with minimal pattern are the most flattering, but make sure you pair them with a girly, lighter garment on top! Draw attention away from your legs with a DIY scallop detail for an on-trend look, or add emphasis to your legs with a 70’s inspired patterned pair – the possibilities are endless!
This week’s Ways to Wear was requested by the beautiful Bee, who is jetting off to Corfu in a matter of weeks for a holiday away. I figured shorts were a pretty standard holiday staple, and although I have already written a W2W feature on denim cut-offs, there are just too many shorts to pass up on the chance to write another!
Look One is, in my opinion, a modern spin on the classic Summer, Rivera look. The bright blue of the top clashes with the dainty pink floral shorts, and revives the standard navy colour that is so often worn on holidays in the summer. For those who really want to wear floppy hats but feel self-conscious doing so while at home like me, I always find that going abroad means you can adopt a “new persona”, bringing about the perfect opportunity to embrace that effortlessly chic look. While protecting your face from the sun rays and all that of course! This panama hat from Accessorize is the sweetest thing ever and would add a lovely, eclectic twist to this look. Finally, accessories should be kept to a minimum: bracelets, rings and watches are pretty much a no when in a sunkissed destination, so a mid-length necklace will suffice to add a little bit extra to an outfit.
I really wish that someone would have gently informed me that white shorts were not a good idea when going to the beach on a daily basis on my travels at a younger age. White goes see-through in water, so I tend to now steer clear of it whether popping to the pool or beach. Additionally, if you are pale before you go on holiday, as Bee has proclaimed she is, white will only wash you out further. I’ve picked this beige coloured pair from F+F at Tesco, which I swear by in the summer. They won’t wash you out, they match perfectly with the majority of tops/bikini tops/swimming costumes, and will emphasise your tan when you finally get one! I’ve gone for this beautiful tie back suntop from Topshop to add some print to the outfit, which is another huge trend for this SS11. I think this would be a great day-to-night look too, perhaps if you were spending the day away from the beach, and then going out for a meal or drinks!
My final Look is more of a throw-on outfit to go with a swimming costume or bikini. I often go out for a day and don’t return to my hotel before going to the beach in the afternoon, and something simple, pale coloured and chic is perfect. All-in-one swimsuits are absolutely adorable at the moment, bringing a 50’s-esque, kitsch touch to the beach! The top can easily be swapped for a kaftan, for another day-to-night easy look. Also, as a cheeky FYI, if you pick up a New Look in-store magazine, you get a lovely 20% off at the moment! 😉
I hope you all enjoyed this post, especially Bee!, as Easter break is nearing for us all and I’m sure a lot of my readers will be off on their travels soon! Keep those requests coming in on Formspring, Twitter, or by email if you have an item in mind, and I’ll definitely see what I can do for you!
Just wanted to add a quick apology for being so MIA on Blogger and Twitter. I’ve been trying to get my University work all sorted for an early hand-in, so I can go home earlier! It’s really not like me at all to not comment or read blogs for days on end! I’m definitely going to set some time aside tomorrow afternoon to have a proper catch-up with all you lovely ladies 😉 If you have emailed me over the weekend and in the past few days, I’ll try and reply to you in tomorrow’s morning seminar – ha!
