Waking up to snow is simply one of life’s greatest pleasures. The utopian, almost eerie, calm in the air the evening, before awakening to soft flurries of the good stuff floating quietly to the ground in unreserved grandeur. Or, indeed, to an excitable other half bouncing about excitedly by the windowsill at four o’clock in the morning. They say in Korea that the first snow signifies that love will blossom with whomever you’re with as the first flake falls. I saw it in a Korean drama when I was a teenager and so the notion offers romantic connotations, for me.
And there is such romance about the whole saga: untouched snow, watching your puppy bound about the garden eating mouthfuls of it, bundling up cosy in countless layers, remarking ‘ooh I wonder what it’s like elsewhere’ knowing you have no intention of moving more than 20 steps from home, taking the obligatory photos to recount memories in months to come, catching snowflakes on your nose, tongue and eyelash, strolling hand-in-hand, noses red and eyes aglow with wonder.
This season, I’ve had a real hankering for a teddy coat. A snuggly, oversized coat made from faux shearling that I could bundle up and get oh so cosy in. But somehow, the sartorial gods were all against me. First was the Monki version, tried on in XXS and absolutely perfect; sold out by the time I’d got home in my furrowed ‘I won’t carry that home from London!’ mood. Then came the hooded Pull & Bear version – I spent three hours describing to Kaye in minute detail of how I got trapped in that reversible jacket and vowed to return it as soon as humanly possible. Next, the H&M version, so big in my usual size that I could’ve fit three of me in there!

Enter the Stradivarius teddy coat. Oversized lapels, two cute little flap pockets on the front, lined for comfort and, like Baby Bear, just right. I’m besotted. Fellow petite girls, I’ve got your back. Yesterday’s first snow felt like the ideal time to debut it, paired with a simple black rib knit jumper beneath, my faithful MUJI touchscreen gloves, my red Hunter wellies and some let’s-not-speak-of-them lounge pants (Bershka, if you must know!). Perfect snow day attire.
