Summer is here! And is it just me who finds themselves completely surprised that the season has rolled around so quickly?! Perhaps it’s because here in England we experience almost awkwardly long stretches of winter, they’re cold but not freezing and my gosh are they boring. They eke themselves out so much so that us Brits find ourselves sheltering in coats until gone April! This year we even saw snow in April! Obligatory weather small talk aside, it’s time for me to write down my ultimate summer bucket list for 2018. Read on to discover my to-do list, and don’t forget to let me know what’s on yours!
Holiday with my boyfriend!
➳ It’s been six months since Harvey and I went away (see our guide to Amsterdam here) and as our two-year anniversary is TOMORROW, we’ve booked a five-day beach escape for the end of this month. We don’t yet live together so we’re both looking forward to some quality time together and a chance to top up the ol’ tan! Keep your eyes peeled for some fresh travel and style content soon.
Try a new fitness class or regime
➳ My stint working out using the Carly Rowena Get Gorgeous guide is over in two weeks, and although I’ve seen some great results and absolutely loved it, I think next on my list is to try a new fitness class or regime. Muscle memory is totally a thing and I’m worried I’ll plateau on my progress. On the cards? Haha yoga, BodySculpt classes, the Black Widow workout, and kettlebell classes. Not all at once. Obviously.
See Taylor Swift live
➳ I CAN’T BLOODY WAIT. But really, what’s greater than seeing your favourite artist or band live in the summer? It totally beats listening via Spotify and those tinny speakers you got for Christmas three years ago.
Go for a hike
➳ Something that I really enjoyed when I lived in Hong Kong was hiking. It always surprises people when I mention the incredible vistas you’ll see when hiking, because when you talk about Hong Kong, it calls to mind a bustling cosmopolitan city with bright neon lights and a world-famous harbour. However, the islands are framed with gorgeous mountains and endless panoramic views and it was a great way to get some headspace and some serious exercise. 30k steps anyone?! I’m going away to Austria next month, and we’re hoping to make a day out of a Salzburg hike!
Host a summer barbecue party
➳ After eking ourselves into the barbecue flow last month, our family can’t wait to host another couple of summer barbecues this season! Grilled halloumi and Linda McCartney burgers are totally calling my name. And, the World Cup gives us even more reason to randomly ‘celebrate’ and have a gathering of people at Chez Chai.
Twirl about in a lavender field
➳ June is notoriously the month of all months to enjoy the beauty of lavender farms across England. And we’re lucky enough to have a field only 15 minutes drive from our home! I can’t wait to dose up on hayfever medication and twirl about to capture some photos for Instagram! Ahem…
Admire light-up lanterns at the Oxford Lights Festival
➳ Harvey booked us a pair of tickets last winter to visit the Lights Festival in Oxford. It’ll be so fun to spend an evening under the stars, lighting paper lanterns and recreating that scene from Tangled for ourselves. Plus, it’s about as close to the real thing from Thailand that I’ll get this side of a mortgage process!
Eat a meal based upon seasonal produce
➳ Like I mentioned a few weeks ago, we’ve been trying our hand at growing our own vegetables in the garden. My Granny grew all sorts of vegetables from her garden (runner beans, lettuce, courgettes, tomatoes, coriander, the list goes on!) and I really miss eating fresh, seasonal produce. Hopefully we’ll be able to eat a from-the-garden meal at some point this summer.
Take Milo to the beach for the first time
➳ Milo is yet to visit a beach and we’re hoping to make a family trip down to Brighton this summer to visit my cousin and generally soak up some sea air. And now that Milo is a confident guy in crowds, we can’t wait to introduce him to a beach, even if it is a rocky one!
Visit the Kew Gardens
➳ By now you’ll know of my love for botanical gardens wherever I travel. I just love a good plant and browsing all of the crazy varieties from around the globe! Now that the Temperate House at Kew Gardens is open again, I’m certainly craving a day trip there.
Run the Race for Life
➳ Lastly, my sister and I have signed up for the Race for Life and we’ll be running the 5k in memory of our beloved grandma. We’ve even been training properly for it this year, as last time we kinda winged it… It’s for such a good cause as all of the proceeds raised go towards Cancer Research UK. If you’re not in a position to run a 5k or haven’t got an event near you, why not try downloading the Earthmiles app (you earn points and can buy rewards like healthy treats, trainers, gym memberships and more!) or the Runtastic app (they donate $1 for every km you run, to help fight plastic pollution in the ocean)?
