We’re finally in a position where we’re spending every spare moment browsing Rightmove, Zoopla and several other property websites in search of our first home. Oh yes, this millennial sacrificed her avocados. All jokes aside — because I’ve definitely been averaging at least two avocados a week — I’ve come to realise that saving for a house deposit isn’t even the hard part.
It’s finding somewhere to actually attempt to buy.
For instance, are we happy to compromise and purchase an apartment despite really wanting the added space a house would give us? Which location do we want to buy in? Will we still need cars or easy train access? Does it have potential so that we can try our hand at renovations? Is the area quiet enough for us to live our best simple life? Can we afford somewhere with a garden so that we can have a vegetable patch?
The list is endless, let me tell you!
So, while we rack up hundreds of clicks to those aforementioned sites, Harvey and I have turned our hand to contributing to a pretty ridiculous Google Sheets document where we note all of the furniture, appliances, decor and storage that we want to pick up for said house. It’s proved useful so far, especially as we’ve found we’ve already established an interior style and we’re able to keep our fingers on the pulse in terms of budgeting for actually eventually making the house a home.

Whilst my bedroom here at my parents’ place is all soft greys and pinks, we’re already leaning towards a darker, more industrially led vibe for the house. We want dark woods, brass accents and deep hues to lend a statement look. That being said, one of our key favourites is this Reema floor cushion from Urban Outfitters. These can be styled to your tastes and needs, working as a daybed cushion when placed atop a bench, or as a classic floor chair. I’m one of those freelancers who can’t sit still and spends almost no time in her office, so plenty of seating options is key! Matching the moody colour palette vibes is this Brick Vase from StolenForm: I’ve been obsessed with these vases for years and absolutely want to have one in the house.

As we won’t be buying a new build, we’re keen to put our own stamp on the bathroom and kitchen of whatever house we end up choosing. We have budget set aside to renovate one or the other, depending on the situation at hand, so are prioritising investing in pieces that will make these key rooms feel homey. First up, this wise-quip Get Naked bath mat from Urban Outfitters. I mean, how could we not?! Then we’re also big fans of this GODMORGON mirrored cabinet from IKEA. After seeing it on The Anna Edit’s YouTube channel, I knew it’d be the perfect solution to housing my bountiful skincare stash, Harvey’s grooming gear and all of the other odds and ends that make a bathroom look cluttered. Kitchen-wise, I’d really like a fresh, open space with lighter, reclaimed woods and pale hues. This Lara hook shelf from Urban Outfitters would be perfect for creating a kitchen #shelfie and storing essential tools. Then, a set of glass containers from MUJI to store our food staples, like lentils, pasta, nutritional yeast, and other dry foods. Most excitingly, it means we can also invest in a Dymo label maker at long last!! As Harvey is a trained barista, we’re also desperate to invest in a coffee machine — this DeLonghi one has caught my eye for its’ sleek appearance and impressive capacity.
For the rest of the house, I’m totally into this blush velvet frame armchair from made.com. It’s surprisingly comfy and would make a great conversational piece in my next home office! I’m a huge reader and so this mounted magazine rack would be the perfect home for my currently-reading books and magazines. I mean, isn’t it perfect?! These stunning prints from Mench Living (a local store near me) would be ideal to dress any wall around the place. And finally, the iconic MUJI aroma diffuser so we can fragrance the entire place with essential oil blends.
