“How can I make plaid check shirts look good in the winter? What can I wear them with?”
Although my personal style is minimal and comfort-led, one of the things I enjoy most is clashing patterns and prints to create a bespoke look that’s true to me. Plaid check shirts are one of my all-time wardrobe staples: my favourite was a shirt I picked up from Uniqlo about a year ago. It’s an incredibly versatile piece that can be styled easily throughout spring/summer and autumn/winter.
The key to styling it for winter?
Layering! Lightweight as a flannel shirt is, pairing it with pieces from your existing wardrobe is the easiest way to extend its’ lifespan. Let me introduce you to my favourite style equations…
This look is how I’d be most likely to wear a plaid check shirt. Slip a leopard print bralet underneath and then add a gossamer fine cami in to break up the prints. Keep the shirt unbuttoned and, if desired, belt it to add definition. For cold-weather dressing, I’d team the look with a pair of black skinny jeans, rolled down ankle socks and some cute pixie boots. Finally, add in a snood to polish the look and keep it super cosy.
On the other hand, a plaid check shirt easily works for evenings. Opt for a darker colour palette: a red shirt, black lace bodysuit and high-waisted shirts teamed with heeled boots creates a bold look. Finish it off with tousled hair, a deep red lip and a black fedora hat.
Lastly, here are some bloggers and LOOKBOOK.nu users styling plaid check shirts in their own ways. As ever keep your style dilemmas coming by email on on Formspring, and I’ll pick my favourite question to feature next week!
