One of this season’s key trends is simply: shorts. Groundbreaking, I know, especially for the summer. A staple in most wardrobes – be they a jersey a pair ‘for home’ or a tailored pair for work – this spring/summer, it’s all about baring your pins. And while I appreciate that not everybody is a huge fan of whipping their legs out, the beauty in this trend is that it’s inclusive of all lengths, cuts, fits and prints. There’s something for everyone!
This week’s Ways to Wear was requested by fellow blogger Bee, who’s jetting off to Corfu in a matter of weeks for her summer holiday. Although I’ve already published a W2W feature on denim cut-off shorts, I couldn’t pass up the chance to produce another shorts edition, as they’re a quintessential hot-weather staple.
Look One is, in my opinion, a modern spin on the ever-summery French Riviera look. The bright blue of the top clashes with the dainty pink floral shorts, and revives the standard navy colour that is so often worn on holidays in the summer. For those like me who really want to wear floppy hats but feel self-conscious doing so, I always find that going abroad means you can adopt a new persona, making it the perfect opportunity to embrace that effortlessly chic look. This panama hat from Accessorize is the sweetest thing ever and would add a lovely, eclectic twist to this look. Keep all other accessories to a minimum: bracelets, rings and watches are fussy and leave tan lines whilst in sun-kissed destinations.
I really wish that someone would have gently informed me that white shorts were not a good idea when going to the beach on a daily basis on my travels at a younger age. White goes see-through in water, so I now steer clear of it whether popping to the pool or beach. Instead, I’ve selected this beige pair from F&F in a style that I swear by in the summer. They won’t wash you out, they match perfectly with the majority of tops/bikini tops/swimming costumes, and will emphasise your tan when you finally get one! I’ve gone for this beautiful tie-back sun top from Topshop to add a little print to the outfit – another huge trend this season. I think this would be a great day-to-night look too, especially if you’ll be going from a beach afternoon to a delicious dinner out.
My final Look is more of a throw-on outfit to go with a swimming costume or bikini. I often go out for a day and don’t return to my hotel before going to the beach in the afternoon, and something simple, lightly coloured and chic is perfect. All-in-one swimsuits are absolutely adorable at the moment, lending a ’50s edge to your holiday look. The top can easily be swapped for a kaftan, for another day-to-night easy look. Also, as a cheeky FYI, if you pick up a New Look in-store magazine, you get a lovely 20% off at the moment! 😉
Lastly, I wanted to apologise for being a little off the grid both on the blog and Twitter. I’ve been working hard on my University assignments so that I can hand them in ahead of deadlines and hopefully spend a little more time at home. It’s completely out of character for me not to spend any time reading or commenting on blogs for days on end! And if you’re waiting for a response from me, I’m aiming to get back to you tomorrow. Promise.
