When a new food joint opens up in the Seven Dials, what’s a (blogging) girl to do but round up a chum, surprisingly heavy camera in tow, and brave the rainfall for a bite to eat?
Flesh & Buns is the Bonedaddies ramen bar spin-off. It opened just over a week or so ago and is the sister restaurant with not a noodle in sight. Instead, sashimi, light fluffy buns and a plethora of hot Japanese food awaits at the new Izakaya restaurant. This is how the other side live, and all that.
I hadn’t seen Ling (or Moonbeamstarlight!) in absolutely ages. This is probably the second time in 2013 that I’ve seen her which is crazy. We actually used to work together about three years ago when Ling was my boss and I was a fledging Eyeko intern! So we met up after work, had a traipse around some shops and hunted down Flesh & Buns.

– Prawn tempura with yuzu ponzu (£11)
– Braised pork belly ‘Flesh & Buns’ with mustard miso, pickled apple (£14)
– Crispy duck leg ‘Flesh & Buns’ with turnip pickle, sour plum soy (£14)
Whilst teetering more on the expensive side of evening meal proceedings, I absolutely loved my first experience of Flesh & Buns. From the moment you step in (an anime playing on a big screen) to the moment the food arrives to your table, my oh my has their branding been played out to the tee. Currently it certainly feels very ‘London cool’ with a buzzing atmosphere and plenty going on, perfect for a first date (it’ll take away the awkward ‘really quiet tables’ thing) or for a group meal with your pals.
Honestly? The food was amazing. We probably didn’t need the second helping of Flesh & Buns. Each of our sides – the Prawn Tempura and Softshell Crab – came with really interesting dips, I think they were curated by the house chef, and both slot neatly into the ‘I could use this with everything’ category. The infamous ‘Flesh & Buns’ themselves clearly take inspiration from the Chinese Peking duck and pancakes. Considering I have a favourite Peking restaurant in Hong Kong, these easily matched my expectations – thumbs up for not having to fly to HK for my fave food? 😉
Each portion of Flesh & Bun comes with two light and fluffy buns served in a traditional bamboo steamer. Along with a plate of fresh cucumber and lettuce leaves, a dip and your meat or ‘flesh’, you build a little bun that is simple and easy to eat. Bite-size (or thereabouts) food is so much more delectable, right?! Each of the meats we chose were soft, succulent and perfectly cooked. The key with this kind of dish is a really soft, braised texture.
If you’re in the Seven Dials, Covent Garden area any time soon with a little extra cash to flash, I’d highly recommend a visit to Flesh & Buns. Keep your mind open to new foods and order away from their plentiful menu!
