This post contains a gifted book from Penguin Books.
Widely talked-about in the blogosphere and penned by none other than street style maven Alexa Chung, It has been on my To Read list since it – ho ho! – arrived on UK shores last year.
I haven’t had a chance to pick it up because all of my extra income goes towards University textbooks and resourced. But in an odd twist of fate, I am now the proud owner of the newly released paperback edition, especially to review for Daisybutter readers.
It is a classic coffee table book in that, in the nicest possible way, there just isn’t a whole lot of substance to it.
I found myself flicking It with a cliché coffee in hand, admiring the victories of Alexa Chung’s life, gawping at the frivolities and having a good ol’ nosy at the photographs that brilliantly illustrate the book.
Did I find myself wishing it was a little more autobiographical? Perhaps. But I do think It is a slick, well-presented style-led coffee table book and it’d make a great addition to any Chung enthusiast’s book collection. Plus, it’s a beautiful design for those important shelf styling needs.
If you’re already a die-hard fashion enthusiast, then you’ll love It. There are plenty of style icon references throughout, accompanied by quirky Alexa Chung-isms and anecdotes throughout. I found myself completely immersed by some passages in this section, especially with old photographs that really elevate it into something special and unique.
Alexa also chats at length about her film, celebrity and television style influences, how she got started with her own personal style journey and what her wardrobe essentials are. She effortlessly weaves together style, love, life, wit and charm.
Something that I was surprised to discover is that It included plenty of beauty anecdotes. Of course it makes perfect sense, what with her recent Eyeko London collaboration, but it was lovely all the same to read about her signature cat-eye eyeliner look, discover her beauty icons and get a one-on-one glimpse into her thoughts on the beauty world.
Now I’m going to be completely frank and honest with you here: up until about a week ago, I felt pretty indifferent to Alexa Chung.
Yes, I’m the proud owner of the Mulberry Alexa bag, and yes, I’ve adopted a winged eyeliner look. But I’d never truly seen the allure and magic that surrounded Alexa.
After reading It, I’ve absolutely loved seeing things through Chung’s well-drawn cat-eyes and this little pocket-sized coffee table book and totally changed my perspective.
Oh Alexa, you cool cat.
