Although I’ve become a real aficionado for Airbnb in recent years, I decided to go all-out with hotels for my recent trip to Amsterdam. There’s something about a hotel stay that feels so luxurious and special, particularly when lately we’ve just been saving like crazy for a certain house-shaped purchase. I wanted to surprise Harvey with an awesome city break for his 27th birthday and so booked not one, but two hotels for our stay. Let me introduce you to two places you must book for your next trip to Amsterdam…
We’re already huge fans of citizenM, having stayed at their Tower Hill London location a few years ago. Designed to be a home away from home, every hotel in their portfolio is decorated and furnished similarly so there are no nasty surprises when you stay. Like I said, we’re huge fans of their aesthetic and mantra so I booked us in for one night with a bonus breakfast. A big thank you must go to the team for the complimentary stay! Upon arrival, we were greeted by a friendly concierge (honestly, the concierges are always SO friendly and full of nuggets of advice).
The rooms are all the same, no fuss and frills. A queen-sized bed by a huge window, mood lighting that can be controlled by the in-room iPad and no room service. Instead, there’s a communal dining area and their cloudM bar downstairs, where you grab food and drink at any time of day. Whilst this isn’t conducive to breakfast in bed in your pyjamas, there is a great vibe downstairs and the hotel staff are just awesome for a chit-chat.
I opted for a gin and tonic, whilst Harvey went for the strongest whiskey sour ever.
The lobby area proved an ideal place to cosy up in a squishy sofa, sip our drinks and mull over plans for the trip. The breakfast buffets are to-die-for, freshly cooked hot food, a continental breakfast selection with delicious pastries, hams and cheese, a range of jams, and whichever coffees and teas take your fancy. We were so excited to head back for the breakfast alone!
Address: Pr. Irenestraat 30, 1077 WX Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Disclaimer: Our stay at the citizenM hotel was provided to us in exchange for an honest review. We paid the full amount for our stay at The Tire Station.
The Tire Station
Our next port of call was The Tire Station, situated right at the far left corner of Vondelpark. After extensive research into SO many boutique hotels in Amsterdam, I was ridiculously excited to stay for three nights at The Tire Station. Eco-friendly and attached to Sticky Fingers (the pink cafe!), it was a bit of a no-brainer.
Here, 112 bedrooms are designed to reflect the hotel’s ethos. A headboard wall made of recycled cork(!!), Royal Dutch Auping beds that are ridiculously comfortable and made from completely biodegradable, 100% recyclable materials, and an thermal energy storage system that sustainable ‘redirects’ energy sources. … I know, right?!
Our room was beautifully decorated in navy and blush pink (what we’d already had in mind for our future home), with a stunning bathroom stocked with cruelty-free products. There’s a little wardrobe space, laptop stand, thick blackout curtains and the double room was so spacious, we could even have worked out in there if we wanted to! Speaking of which, there’s a David Lloyd gym next door’s that you can use with your UK membership, or at a discounted rate as a hotel guest.
Address: Amstelveenseweg 5, 1054 MB Amsterdam, Netherlands.
