We’re just over a week into my #seekjunemagic Instagram hashtag challenge, so I thought I’d check in on how you’re all doing. It’s been such a delight to scroll through the hashtag each evening and catch up on what’s setting your souls alight. I’m sharing my favourites on Stories, so make sure your account is set to ‘Public’ if you’d like to be featured.
Something I wanted to touch on this week is how to continually find magic even when you’re feeling down.
One of the things my friends always say to me is that I’m positive, optimistic and dreamy almost to a fault. Damn those Pisces traits. And it’s true. I manage to find the good in everything, even when things look and feel pretty shitty at first. Without sounding like Phoebe’s enthusiastic date that time in F.R.I.E.N.D.S, there really is so much joy to be found in the mundanities of everyday.
Pause and savour the moment
Much of the time, we fail to see past the mundane in everyday because we’re so accustomed to our routines and we’re in a rush to get through them, ready for that dreamy me-time. The first step is to make space for magic. Offload your mind of its clutter by writing down those anxieties, worries and things-to-remember into a notebook, and look up from your phone.
Our generation is absolutely defined by the digital world, and it’s comforting when you put your phone away and realise that life is happening right now, all around us. Whether it’s on your commute or whilst you’re enjoying breakfast/lunch/dinner, make space to be present and soak in your surroundings. Perhaps there’s a bird enjoying a bath in the park, or there’s a particularly vibrant flower amongst the masses of green. Start small and work your way up to bigger moments of magic.
A new perspective
You might be like me in that, somewhere along the line, your line of vision turned to square frames. You began looking at the world through an Instagram lens, wondering if a moment from everyday was ‘Instagram worthy’. If it had enough flower arch. Enough marble. A little phone detox (nothing crazy, just zip it away in a pocket of your handbag) will do a world of wonder.
What can you see when you pull your vision away from a square is incredible. You’ll notice the teeny tiny details, like a sparkle of light as rainwater runs down the pavement or petals that look like confetti underneath the tree you parked by.
I also like to assume the identity of an everyday tourist: pretend as though you’re visiting every day as a brand new person. You’ve never done the walk to work or that trip to the gym. What do you see now?
Use the hashtag
If you’re struggling to feel inspired to capture everyday June magic, head over to the hashtag (as well as the #seekjanuarymagic and #seekfebruarymagic ones) for inspiration from the community. It’s so inspiring to see what others see as ‘magic’ in their days and often it’s something we overlooked in our own day.
Consider it from a seasonal perspective too: what makes June so great for you? Perhaps there’s a specific memory that you can pinch a dose of inspiration from, or there’s an occasion that you think will be oh so memorable in years to come.
Join in on the #seekjunemagic hashtag challenge over on Instagram now. I love seeing your magical frames!
