We’re in the full swing of summer now and, perhaps it’s because of the strange couple of summers we’ve had for the past two years, this year I’m embracing every small (and big) moment that I can. Be it a morning coffee out in the garden or admiring the trees on a walk after work, alfresco lunch dates or planning farm visits with friends, I’m trying to, safely, soak it all up. And boy has it made a difference! I don’t think you could wipe the smile off my face with an industrial-effect wet wipe!
There’s a lot to be said for appreciating the smaller, not necessarily finer details of the everyday mundane. Here’s to another list of petite, open-hearted joys, the moments that’ve brought and woven poetry to my days, this fortnight:
一. Preparing my boyfriend a home-cooked Japanese sando packed lunch for his first shift of the week. Our love language is quite possibly food.
二. Basking in the July warmth… until it felt dangerously hot and the climate crisis felt very real.
三. An evening awaiting the supermoon, July’s full moon being the biggest of the year this year. Milo and I sat on the windowsill and waited until it hung high and shone brightly in the sky, just before bed.
四. A dreamy date day in London at the weekend.
五. Evenings watching It’s Okay to Not Be Okay after work. Forgot how much I loved Kim Soo-hyun, and I’m glad to finally be getting round to this one! So many dramas, such little time…
六. How bustling yet peaceful it feels on Southbank, London.
七. Moments where you feel completely at ease and full of clarity. Often during my morning coffee perched on the side of one of Dad’s vegetable planter boxes.
八. Love Island running commentary with Bolly.
九. Reading mornings. I replaced my gym mornings with at-home reading sessions, a couple of days this fortnight, due to the heatwave. Whilst being out of my routine felt odd, it was also lovely to sit, be still and get a good couple of chapters down! Right now I’m slowly making my way through The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab.
十. My boyfriend showing up at my doorstep and presenting me with two tubs of ice-cream mid-heatwave. How did I find him?! I made matcha affogatos with some, and then chain-ate the rest to manage the heatwave on Tuesday.
What’re some of the petite joys from your life lately?
