I’m Finally A Kindle Convert and Here’s Why

If you’d told 2013 Michelle that, 10 years later, she’d be a Kindle girly, she’d have scoffed at you and continued ploughing down the aisles of each and every bookshop, armfuls of books in tow. I have always adored carrying books around with me and would even take my beloved fabric-bound Disney storybooks for family days out. Not much has changed over the years: I am a firm ‘carry a book everywhere with you’ person. But what has changed is the pace at which I’m reading books and the amount of space that I am fast running out of.

Fast forward to 2023 and I’m officially a convert. A few weeks ago, I bought a refurbished Kindle (11th Generation, 6”, 16GB) with the hopes of using it on my commutes and to generally save a little money, since eBooks are typically more affordable than physical copies. I may have only been using it for a handful of weeks, but let me tell you why I adore mine so much already…

1. It is paper-light

Of course I knew that one of the key selling points of a Kindle was its weight. But I really didn’t believe it until I saw it (or held it).

This thing is incredibly lightweight, making it perfect to read chunky books at ease, as well as to read on the go. I’m a devoted book carrier, but my Kindle now goes everywhere with me! I find it perfect for one-handed commute reading on crowded London trains and Tubes, but also when laying in strange positions on the sofa or in bed. My weak lil wrists are so thankful!

2. The screen is brilliantly adaptable

Something I really worried about was the screen of a Kindle. As a chunky book lover, how could that compare to glorious just-so grainy paper?! But, the 6” 300ppi screen is a great little size and the built-in adjustable front light works so well in delivering an evenly lit display. I don’t find that it hurts my eyes, since it isn’t backlit, and I’ve found it works brilliantly when on trains, dipping in and out of tunnels. If you’re somebody that is a little fussy with how the typefaces present, there’s nine fonts to select from – including serif and sans serif fonts and even one for dyslexic readers.

3. It’s wonderfully customisable

And, of course, it can be customised even further than the screen! Seriously, the Kindle community is so creative and dedicated to the cause. Right now I have a practical little magnetic flip case (which automatically sends my Kindle to sleep when I close it), but the majority of the community love a clear case in addition to full-cover decals, stickers and cute Popsockets. While I can’t bring myself to stick my stickers directly onto a device, I am already considering picking up a clear case and repurposing a sheet of clear acetate to decorate with stickers and pop in. Well, we’ll see… Then, TheLitHomebody on Instagram came up with a fun little hack to create custom wallpapers! Hey, I grew up in the age of customising MySpace layouts, making virtual dolls and playing life-sim games!

Even though I’m officially a Kindle convert, I still see myself buying physical copies of books. For instance, I will always be working on my Haruki Murakami collection and I’ll never not want brimming shelves in my home. Plus, I love have physical copies of books that I love so I can read them time and time again, lend them to friends and have a reminder of the stories that I adored.
