Editor’s Note: I wrote this on Wednesday when I felt hopeful and positive towards the UK General Election 2019. Now (10.38am, Friday 13th December), I feel despondent and devastated by the result, although sadly I’m not surprised. I’ll continue to fight for what I believe in and to protect the vulnerable, and I’m making it my business to volunteer more, understand more, listen more, next year. Now back to the original post, which is almost funny to read back! There’s no joy this morning, but there are always glimmers of it when you look back on things.
I always find that at this time of year, I don’t need to look far to find the joy in the everyday; I’m surrounded by it! From glimpses of twinkling lights to the pastel-hued sunrises painting the skies pink and orange each morning, I truly adore December in England, even if I have been wearing thermals almost religiously underneath all of my outfits… Then there’s the excitement of confirming plans over the Christmas period, spotting all of the Christmas adverts on TV, picking up ‘party food’ just because it’s available… I love it all!
That being said, it doesn’t mean I haven’t still been seeking out the little moments. There’s a lot to be said for appreciating the smaller, not necessarily finer details of the everyday mundane. Here’s to another list of petite joys, the moments that’ve brought and woven poetry to my days, this fortnight:
一. Finding the *perfect* gift, totally unexpectedly, for that someone on your Christmas gift list.
二. How every sentiment is bookended with ‘have a wonderful Christmas!’ ‘and you!!’ at the moment.
三. Digging your hands deep in your pockets and finding a) spare change, and b) gloves! I always forget I own gloves until I’m about 15 minutes into desperately needing them.
四. Dressing the Christmas tree! We put ours up at the weekend and had such a great time reminiscing over each of the baubles — we add a new one every year!
五. Coffees made by Harvey in the morning.
六. Booking my first new client of 2020! It’s always exciting to add to the roster.
七. Finding some clarity with regards to what I want to be doing next year. I had so many grand plans but I’ve finally sunk my teeth into all of them and worked out exactly what is the best route for me. YAY!
八. Our annual Christmas Day date night!
九. Enjoying a new cup of Beanies coffee every single day; we bought their advent calendar at half price on the 1st and it’s a real treat to have a differently flavoured coffee each day.
十. Pyjamas (and/or loungewear) and socks left on the heater so they’re warm when I get in.
What are some of the petite joys in your life lately?
