Five Podcasts I’ve Been Enjoying

Podcasts and I are in an on-off, love-hate relationship. I can either lose myself in a good series for a solid week or swear off podcasts completely for months and months. Right now, I’m back in an ‘on’ and ‘love’ situation, enjoying listening to them during my morning workouts before work and, sometimes, in the evenings when my eyes can’t hold out for a book after nine hours’ screen time. You could say they’re an essential part of my routine at the moment.

I doubt this will become any sort of regular feature here on Daisybutter, but I thought I’d share a few of the podcast series that I’ve been enjoying during my morning workout sessions lately.

The Vietnamese Boat People

My boyfriend recommended this pod to me: it’s a collection of stories from the ‘Vietnamese Boat People’, a population of people that were displaced after the Vietnam War. Almost two million Vietnamese people risked their lives to flee the post-war oppression and hardships, many of whom escaped by boat and were captured and brutally punished. While at times it’s a tough listen, I’ve found it to be essential and I always find it valuable to understand others’ stories and histories.

Back to the Beach

If you’re anything like me – and I know you are, I have the stats and facts! – then you were probably also a big Laguna Beach fan back in the day. Well, Kristin Cavallari and Stephen Colletti have joined forces to revisit the teenage years that were broadcast on MTV in their weekly podcast, Back to the Beach. They’re now in their second season, covering an episode of the show per episode and they regularly invite ex-cast members as guests! Yes, Lauren Conrad does make an appearance!

Stuff You Should Know

Something that you should know about me is that I’m an infinitely curious soul. I lose myself in rabbit holes of random facts and mini research sessions all the time. This podcast is a culmination of that and means I find myself discovering new things about the world every time I listen to an episode. I appreciate that there are longer episodes too, since my workouts tend to come in at about an hour and a half these days.

Ologies with Alie Ward

Like the previous recommendation, Ologies focuses on a different ‘-ology’ every episode. There are episodes about domicology (abandoned buildings and ghost towns), meteorology, mycology and beyond, and I love learning more about the most random things.

Friends With Business Benefits

I only recently started listening to Franky and Charlie’s podcast, but I’m already absolutely loving it. Friends With Business Benefits is aimed at creatives that seek connection, understanding and support. The hosts are self-employed business owners based in Bristol, England, which does mean many of the topics focus heavily on the freelance juggle, but it’s a valuable listen to people that juggle work and a busy life in general. I particularly loved their episodes on list-making and on reflecting on their journalling processes – really cosy and inspiring short episodes that set me in good stead for a productive work day!
