Journalling Prompts for When You’re Happy

Journalling is a therapeutic form of writing to me: handwritten, I feel more connected to the work, but I also tend to use it as an outlet for the thoughts and emotions that I no longer want to feel. So, what happens when I pick up my notebook and pen and it turns out that I’m… happy?

By and large, we gravitate towards writing to unpack complex feelings, thoughts and emotions. On Sunday this past weekend, I opened my notebook and couldn’t decide where to start. There was no central moment to recount and unpack, I was just happy and content.

For those that want to capitalise on this happy mood, I love journalling for manifestation and ‘scripting’. Scripting is ‘a technique used in manifestation which sees you sitting and journaling as if your dreams have already happened’. The Manifestation Collective, founded by Victoria Jackson, shares plenty of ideas for this, including their bumper 100 journalling prompts for self-discovery. I always find that I’m more focus and in tune with my personal goals when I take some time out for scripting. For me, this happens seasonally or often at the start of the year. It sounds a bit woo-woo, but it’s a brilliant exercise to remind you that you can start on all of your dreams right now.

If that’s not for you, then there’s plenty of ways to continue journalling when you’re happy. Use it as an opportunity to capture all of the good things and memories: just like how Instagram is our highlights reel, let your journal become one too. I have loved flipping back through past notebooks and reliving the fun moments.

Journalling Prompts For When You’re Happy

  1. How do you feel right now?
  2. Write, in detail, about a moment when you felt incandescently happy.
  3. What is the current source of your happiness? How can you keep this going for longer?
  4. If time and money were no object, what would you do?
  5. Who has made you smile lately? How so? Capture every detail.
  6. What was your favourite thing about today? Zero in on it and remember every small thing.
  7. What are five goals (big or small!) that you accomplished recently?
  8. How do you talk to yourself when you’re happy? How do you talk to yourself when you’re unhappy? Do you notice any similarities or differences?
