Petite joys

We’re almost at a month in official lockdown in the UK (i.e. not going out unless to buy groceries, in an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus and protect the NHS), and I’ve been social distancing for nearly six weeks. Surreal as that may be, it means I’m finally acclimatising of sorts to this slower rhythm and staggered pace. I’m trying not to do much, if any, forward thinking, and long stints without my phone are really helping as well.

There’s a lot to be said for appreciating the smaller, not necessarily finer details of the everyday mundane. Here’s to another list of petite joys, the moments that’ve brought and woven poetry to my days, this fortnight:

一. Discovering the @storynineteen account on Instagram. I’m obsessed with these FaceTime photoshoots, and conducted my own yesterday!

二. A sunny afternoon spent in the garden on an old IKEA blanket, reading an entire book in one sitting.

三. How delicious a shower feels on your skin after said afternoon spent in the garden.

四. The community spirit and camaraderie of our weekly Barre classes on Zoom.

五. Both the excitement and the execution of Apink’s comeback! I am obsessed with Dumhdurum.

六. Finally finding a coveted DIY Recipe by balloon in Animal Crossing!

七. Vegan snacks, sent by post, from my wonderful pal Sophie.

八. Finding a spark of isolation creativity. My writing fire is finally alight again, and I think it’ll be so special to read these words again in years to come.

九. How it feels to sink a tired, grateful body into the huggable pillow of a freshly made bed.

十. Finding comfort in new, if temporary or permanent, routines.

Thank you to the NHS and key workers who’re working tirelessly to protect our nation. I’m SO grateful to you all.

What’re some of your petite joys, lately?
