Petite joys
After a tumultuous couple of weeks, I’m genuinely really glad to be sat at my desk, window thrown open and orange juice beside me, ready to pen another ‘Petite joys’ list. In fact, these lists have been a grounding force for me during lockdown, especially given there are no big things happening except from The Very Big C Thing, and that there’s not especially a whole lot to definitively look forward to. Now that my freelance work is at a complete standstill — due to my clients and the ones I’d had lined up all cancelling their projects — I’m beginning to notice an amalgam of imposter syndrome and identity loss seep in. I wrote about this a really long time ago, but right now I’m just trying to figure things out for myself again.
There’s a lot to be said for appreciating the smaller, not necessarily finer details of the everyday mundane. Here’s to another list of petite joys, the moments that’ve brought and woven poetry to my days, this fortnight:
一. When the (head) fog cleared and I finally started to feel myself again. The past fortnight in lockdown has felt really difficult, but I’m getting there.
二. Immersing myself in Grow & Glow bundles. I’ve been feeling a little lost with some elements of my online content recently, but I’m excited to gain some clarity again and get Daisybutter back to where I want it to be.
三. Taylor Swift’s City of Lover concert on Disney+!! After feeling really sad that we wouldn’t be seeing her this summer after all, it was so great to watch the premiere concert and spark the excitement again.
四. Bathing in brilliant warmth and sunlight, a welcome midweek treat.
五. The support and community over on my Discord server! I’ve already spoken about the gang before, but it’s been a constant joy. I honestly can’t wait to chat to everyone on there, daily.
六. My new macramé hanging! My friend Lily makes beautiful macramé hangings, and so I bought a piece for my bedroom.
七. The sheer joy of tearing into a box that contains a big ol’ book order! This week I invested in Meera Sodha’s East, alongside some fiction titles, and I’d totally forgotten how much I love sinking into a new cookbook and adding Post-it’s to all of the recipes I want to try.
八. Birdsong, every morning. It’s basically only enjoyable now that I know it doesn’t signify a lengthy commute into London.
九. Milo, tongue and tail wagging, nestled in his ‘den’ in the garden as we aired out the duvets.
十. Making a bit of a breakthrough with some work I’ve been, well, working on.
What’re some of the petite joys in your life lately?
