Petite joys

Hello from the other side of a British heatwave! Thunder is rolling, lightning is painting the sky neon, and the constant pitter-patter of the rain is keeping me company. Even though it’s kinda scary, it’s a welcome shift after unbearable, unnatural heat. I’ve had this week off work, and it’s been such a relaxing one. We’d originally hoped to go away for a few nights, but I couldn’t shake the anxiety of going away juuuust yet. Instead, my days have been filled with coffee, books, sitting in front of a fan, and making hash brown wraps with my sister. A.k.a. a dream.

There’s a lot to be said for appreciating the smaller, not necessarily finer details of the everyday mundane. Here’s to another list of petite joys, the moments that’ve brought and woven poetry to my days, this fortnight:

一. Sheets of crisp cool breeze, enveloping the skin after endless days of the odd heat and humidity.

二. Coffee from our favourite local independent, sipped as we wandered back to the car via a quiet churchyard.

三. Finally having the time to clean and tidy my room and home office. Life has been hectic over the past month, and it feels good to have my space feel like mine again; in order, neatly reshuffled, bookshelves organised.

四. The accomplished feeling you get after managing to finish an entire book in one day. Although annual leave looks a lot different this year, it’s been pretty nice to recharge at home.

五. My first Barre class back in a month! Sweaty as it may have been, I don’t think there’s anything I adore more than some time at the Barre.

六. QUEER EYE. I finally started watching it about a billion months late, and I’m obsessed. I spend most nights playing Animal Crossing and praying that the Fab 5 will come and visit me…

七. The very precise strain of magic you feel when you settle down to write, and words flow and flow and flow. Ditto the intangible joy of noting down 10+ ideas of shoots to work on this weekend.

八. The chance to wear sundresses usually only reserved for sweltering holidays away.

九. Getting back to it with my bullet journal. I didn’t really journal throughout May or June, but the last few weeks have seen me get back to doodlin’, plannin’ and documenting my days again. I think I’m going to use my newest Papier addition to do my own version of morning pages soon.

十. Candle. Making. Louise and I started making candles during lockdown, and we’re finding it the most therapeutic, joyful hobby. The precision and fragrance alchemy has been so fun to trial!
