Petite joys

I feel like I’m starting to sound like a broken 2020 record, but it feels as though there aren’t many big joys around. The mood is understandably low all around, and it’s been a difficult week. From London and Essex – two surrounding areas from where I live – about to head into a lockdown to the Parliament ‘debate’ about the racism East and South East Asians have suffered throughout the pandemic, I’m not feeling great. But I’ve got a big coffee beside me, a fresh book delivery, and lots of little things to work on.

There’s a lot to be said for appreciating the smaller, not necessarily finer details of the everyday mundane. Here’s to another list of petite joys, the moments that’ve brought and woven poetry to my days, this fortnight:

一. Yellow leaves hanging on in the autumn air. They’re so underrated up against their red and orange counterparts, but so gorgeous in their own right.

二. Preparing for a really exciting launch with my sister. We started a hobby in lockdown and are now running with it; I cannot WAIT to share it with you all!

三. How my ACNH island is looking right now! I’ve finally found a way to make spooky season work on Moonacre, and I’m pretty obsessed with making the little Halloween updates.

四. A drive-thru Starbucks from yesterday. Not my top choice, but I felt safer driving for a coffee rather than walking through a busy town centre.

五. How it feels when your bed finally starts warming up after slipping into chilly sheets. It’s getting cold in England, and I’m fully underprepared to be honest.

六. Counting acorns on nature walks. I’ve been heading out more, recently, after reading The Overstory and becoming completely enamoured by trees. I LOVE THEM.

七. Making breakfast in the mornings with Dad. We’re not morning people at all, so it usually involves attempting to grill food with the oven off or pouring coffee from an unboiled kettle…

八. A video call with my beloved Granny in Malaysia!! She’s thriving in the heat, and was very concerned about how the UK are handling COVID-19. A.k.a., not handling it all. C’mon y’all, let’s not let down Granny Chai.

九. Seeing my autumn knits and dresses all hung up in my wardrobe. The best colour and texture palette, wouldn’t you agree?

十. All of your support on Ko-fi. I set one up a few months ago to support this blog whilst work is quiet, and I’m so grateful to you all for continuing to support my free content.

What are some of your petite joys, lately?
