My Spring 2023 Wardrobe Capsule

Happy spring, my loves!

At last, winter is on its way out and we can start leaving the house without our Big Coat™ – a monumental time of year for any Brit. While I’m personally a fan of all the seasons and kind of like being able to dip into my indulgent coat collection, there’s a limit and I reached it about three weeks ago. I am over having to cover my outfits with a big coat and can’t wait for imminent light jacket and blazer season: spring.

I wrote a while ago about how I switch my wardrobe out seasonally. It keeps my sartorial life varied and interesting, makes it feel fun and fresh to get dressed every morning, and also prolongs the lifecycle of my pieces. That is, I’m not forcing lighter knits to work harder through seasons and over-washing pieces either. Most of the pieces in my wardrobe are investment pieces I’ve had for years – proof that buying well means wearing slow.

If you’re after a wardrobe refresh for spring, read on to discover my essential pieces and the more sustainable styles I’ll be adding to my seasonal edit.

A Great Trench Coat

I know, I know… You don’t need another random from the Internet to tell you that you need a trench coat for spring. But, you really do. Versatile, functional and stylish, a classic trench – I’m talking one with a double-breasted fastening, storm flap and belt – will take you miles in mild and often unpredictable spring weather. (A storm flap is that half back panel: it runs water off its edge so your back and waist area remains comfortably dry!) They’re also perfect for autumn, too.

Light Knit

After months and months of layers and jumpers, another knit is hardly top of the list. But they make a chic top layer and are a little more elevated than a T-shirt. It won’t really be T-shirt weather yet, anyway. I have a cream mock neck jumper than I wear almost religiously in milder weather. It’s the ideal piece to slip under a blazer or wore solo tucked into suit trousers or washed denim.

Dresses

The most exciting thing about spring is bringing out a few dresses from my archive. A good printed midi dress is key for special occasions and can be dressed down with a cosy cardigan. I also love a knitted dress for pre-spring, ideal for staying warm in unpredictable weather. From my existing stash? I have a rib-knit midi dress and little floral smock dress that I can’t wait to wear again.

Blazers

You all know that I’m a blazer girl through and through: I wear them all the time not just at work but in everyday outfits too. Have a well-fitting one in your arsenal, as well as an oversized jacket, and they’ll instantly elevate any look. I love my H&M one for polishing everyday looks in the office, and can’t wait to wear my Le Capsole Copenhagen blazer throughout spring! And, of course, a The Frankie Shop blazer is on my wishlist…!

Suit Trousers

Equally, a pair of suit trousers will go miles amongst your go-to jeans and leggings. I practically live in gym leggings and now I LOVE a suit trouser to smarten things up. Opt for a wide-leg cut that sits high-to-mid waist and always get them tailored to fit you. They’ll go great with T-shirts, light knits and even a slouchy jumper, lending an instant polish. I wear my Sisterhood the Label pair – crafted from deadstock fabric! – with trainers, to avoid looking too business gal. Straight-leg suit trousers are also a great alternative to jeans and leggings – team them with a light knit and chunky trainers for pre-spring, then with a bright tee and blazer.

Chunky White Trainers

I can’t remember when the [redacted] Triple S trainers took over, but it’s undeniable that a chunky white trainer is essential year-round. I LOVE my Stella McCartney Loop trainers: they’re made from recycled materials in a special glue-less construction so they can be easily disassembled and recycled after their last wear. On my wishlist are the Stella McCartney S-Wave 1 trainers, which are crafted from a grape-based alternative to leather, and have a modern icon vibe.

What are you adding to your wardrobe this spring? And what are you most looking forward to wearing again?
