Journalling Prompts for Birthdays

This month, I turned 33. As I tiptoe closer and closer, still, to my mid-thirties, I fear that I’ve lost the confidence, clarity and surety that came when I turned 30. I wrote about this only last week, after spending a few evenings reflecting on 32 through the lens of my long-form journal, privy to my innermost thoughts. As I flicked back through the pages of my notebook, I saw common themes: fear, anxiety, friendship, the future, sense of self. It’s natural to question these things. In fact, after reading through the entries, I learned that I really care about living my life with intention and in a conscientious way; mindful of those around me. That’s not a bad thing.

It’s good to get into the habit of reading entries back, however cringe it feels at first, because you can understand where you were and how things are going now. As I stepped into a new birth year, it felt good to reflect on 32 and on what I hope for from my new age. As fate would’ve had it, I got to start a shiny new notebook for March. I wrote pages and pages about the lessons I’d learned, I talked about my highlights from the year, how I felt, how I want to feel, and how I’d like to grow personally and expand my world.
Here are a few prompts to get you started, for your next birthday:
- How do you feel about this birthday?
- What were the three biggest lessons that you learned since your last birthday?
- Write about one of these lessons in detail.
- What were the highlights of your year?
- How did you feel, for the most part, in this age?
- And, how would you like to feel in your next year?
- How would you like to grow in this age?
- Script your dream year in a letter to yourself, and manifest your best age yet.
Do you have any birthday rituals?
