A Writer’s Desk Essentials

Between writing my novel, playing my Nintendo Switch, and working hybrid for my day job, I’m somebody that naturally spends a lot of time at her desk. This room is my cosy sanctuary away from the world, filled with my books, my hobbies, my craft projects, and the best pink walls. After spending so much time perfecting my library room, how could I not spend inordinate amounts of time here?

So, I thought I’d immortalise, here, my current writer’s desk essentials. Here is a collection of the objects I reach for the most, the tools of my craft, as it were.

Ancient laptop

As much as I’d like to be a typewriter person, a laptop is my gateway to the world and where I do all of my writing. My MacBook Air from 2019 really struggles these days, but it does work. In a few more years, I’d imagine I’ll swap it out for a non-Apple laptop. For now, it does the job, albeit requiring a charge every 30 minutes and lagging typing!

Traveler’s Notebook (for organising)

I wrote about my Traveler’s Notebook a few weeks ago and, while my system has changed slightly, it is still my primary daily organiser and planner. My monthly calendars, weekly to-do lists and everyday notes live in here, and it goes absolutely everywhere with me so that I can make notes and update my calendar with any plans. (My dentist receptionist finds it particularly funny that I like to make note of my appointments, for some reason.) I even plan out my writing sessions, and LOVE the feeling of checking it off!

Paper Republic (for novel and study notes)

Since beginning my TCM studies, I’ve found great pleasure and brain organisation in having a separate place for my course notes and assignment plans. This Paper Republic Grand Voyageur book fits anywhere and is always on hand to capture my study notes, plus my novel-writing scribbles and chapter outline. I write my novel notes in pencil, since they always seem to be changing course. I also have an insert in here to very simply list the books I’ve read.

Aesop Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm

The only hand cream I trust at my desk is this Aesop one. The fragrant balm sinks in quickly, so it doesn’t feel greasy or leave marks on my keyboard or mouse. Winner.

onegreenbottle 800ml water bottle

At this point, my water bottle is my emotional support item. I always have it filled with very-warm water, and the large size means I don’t have to get up from my desk as often.

MUJI 0.38 pens

Finally, the most-essential item on my writer’s desk… MUJI 0.38 pens! I am completely beholden to these gel fine liners – they write so well and are the perfect line weight for my teeny-tiny handwriting. I have several on my desk, one in my work bag, and always one in my handbag, no matter the plan or destination.

Between trinkets and pens, what are some of your desk essentials? I’d love to know.
